A Volkswagen Golf petrol vehicle in Brighton, Melbourne’s inner suburbs, began experiencing engine misfiring and rough running after the owner had been filling the vehicle with 91 octane petrol.
This particular turbocharged Volkswagen engine requires a minimum of 95 octane fuel to operate correctly. Using lower octane petrol in engines designed for higher octane fuel can lead to poor combustion, misfires, detonation and engine knocking, which in more serious cases can result in internal engine damage or failure.
Rapid Fuel Assist attended the vehicle in Brighton and carried out a complete fuel system drain to remove the low-octane petrol from the fuel tank.
The incorrect fuel was safely removed before 98 octane petrol was supplied and added to the vehicle. After refilling the system with the correct fuel, the engine was started and tested to confirm the Volkswagen Golf was operating normally again.
The vehicle was successfully returned to service without requiring mechanical workshop repairs.
Across inner Melbourne suburbs such as North Melbourne and Malvern, Rapid Fuel Assist regularly responds to a range of fuel-related incidents including wrong fuel in vehicles, fuel contamination, and diesel spills on public roads.
One of the most common mistakes we see is petrol accidentally put into a diesel vehicle, which occurred with a Mazda CX-5 in North Melbourne. When petrol enters a diesel engine it removes the lubrication properties required for the high-pressure fuel system and can cause severe damage if the vehicle is driven. Our technicians carried out a complete mobile fuel drain and fuel system flush, safely removing the contaminated petrol and restoring the correct diesel fuel supply before testing the vehicle.
In a separate incident in Malvern, a truck struck a kerb which resulted in diesel escaping from the fuel tank and spilling onto the roadway. Emergency services including Fire Rescue Victoria and the relevant road authority had already attended the scene to secure the area and manage the immediate hazard. Rapid Fuel Assist was later called in to assist with fuel recovery, contaminated waste collection and environmentally compliant disposal of the recovered diesel.
Fuel incidents such as petrol in diesel engines, diesel in petrol vehicles, contaminated fuel, or road fuel spills require specialised equipment and proper waste handling procedures. Rapid Fuel Assist provides professional mobile fuel recovery and fuel drain services across Melbourne, including North Melbourne, Malvern, South Yarra, Docklands and the Melbourne CBD, helping motorists and fleet operators safely resolve fuel contamination issues.
In Port Melbourne, we attended a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van operated by Australia Post that had experienced a fuel contamination issue. Commercial fleet vehicles such as delivery vans rely on consistent fuel quality and even minor contamination can lead to rough running, warning lights, or potential damage to the fuel system if left untreated.
Our Rapid Fuel Assist mobile fuel recovery unit attended the site and carried out a complete fuel system drain and contamination removal. Using specialised equipment, we safely extracted the contaminated fuel from the tank and fuel lines before supplying fresh diesel to restore correct operation. After refilling, the vehicle was started, tested and inspected to ensure the engine was running smoothly and the fuel system was functioning correctly.
Fleet operators such as Australia Post, logistics companies and commercial delivery services depend on fast response times to keep vehicles on the road. Our mobile service allows us to attend Port Melbourne and surrounding inner-city suburbs quickly, minimising downtime and getting vehicles safely back into operation.
If your van, ute or fleet vehicle has been affected by contaminated fuel or misfuelling, Rapid Fuel Assist provides a professional mobile fuel drain service across Melbourne, including Port Melbourne, South Melbourne, Docklands and the CBD.
